Lying on the east bank of the River Trent, Gainsborough is an inland port and market town in the county of Lincolnshire and has a population of over 20,000. The first reference to the town appears in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle of 1013, then known as Gegneburth, but by the time of the Domesday Book of 1086 it is referred to as Gainseburg: Gegn’s fortified place. The town was one of the capitals of Mercia during the Anglo-Saxon period that preceded the rule of the Danish. Due to its proximity to the stronghold of Torksey it was chosen by the Vikings as an administrative centre. In later years the town was exclusively a community of farmers and was granted a weekly market by King John in 1204. Gainsborough Old Hall was constructed between 1460 and 1480 and is one of the best preserved manor houses in the UK. There is consensus amongst scholars that Gainsborough is the basis for the fictional town of St Ogg’s in George Eliot’s The Mill on Floss as the author stayed in Gainsborough in 1859, and the Old hall is described in detail.

The town is surrounded by scenic countryside and there are numerous local nature reserves nearby. Scotton Common is a 64 hectare local nature reserve that is the largest remaining fragment of once extensive heathlands. Although it is mainly heathland there are a number of diverse habitats that contain some fine examples of flowers such as cuckooflower, marsh gentian and marsh violet.

Idle Valley is another local nature reserve and one of the largest areas for nature conservation in the East Midlands. The 450 hectare site is a network of grassland, scrub, wetland and lakes and is home to a diverse range of flowers and wildlife. It is known as one of the richest birding sites in the region and there are even breeding pairs of waders like redshank and little ringed plover.

Owlet Woods is a 50 hectare site that stands above a low lying floodplain and its varied habitats make it a perfect place to watch wildlife and relax in beautiful surroundings. There are Scots pines here that are thought to be at least 300 years old and over half of the wood is oak and birch. The site is also home to various flowers and fungi.

Mill Farm Gardens are truly a delight for florists and visitors alike, and the 3.5 acre site offers stunning views of the Ancholme Valley and North Lincolnshire Wolds. Complete with a vegetable garden, fernery and wildlife ponds, the gardens also contain a shade house which contains various types of shade loving flowers and plants.
